Ask Jenny: Collagen for Skin

“Hi Jenny! I hear you talk a lot about collagen and specifically how good it is for your skin. Why is this, and how do I add it into my diet? Thanks in advance!

Hi Annie, and thank you for your question! I am an absolute fangirl when it comes to collagen, and whilst it has so many benefits for overall health and wellness, I specifically love how great it is for my skin.

What Does Collagen Do For Your Skin?

Collagen is the main component of the skin, in fact 80% of our skin is formed from collagen. It is found in the extracellular matrix of the skin, so it plays a pivotal role in the skin’s structure and rigidity – it really is the framework that keeps our skin, supple, firm and lifted.

Poor diet, environmental factors and stress can all negatively affect the quality and integrity of collagen in the skin, and from the age of around 25  both the types of collagen in the skin and the amount of collagen in the skin begins to decrease, leading to dryer, thinning skin which is more prone to fine lines, wrinkles and lack of firmness.

Hydrolyzed collagen, such as that in New Chapter’s Collagen Glow is composed of low molecular weight small peptides, which can be easily absorbed in the small intestine and then distributed around the body to the skin.

When the peptides reach the skin, they can stay there for up to 14 days, and provide a two-fold benefit:

My Favorite Hydrolyzed Collagen Powder

My collagen product of choice for skin health is New Chapter’s Collagen Glow. It contains 12g of Types I, II & III collagen, specific types of collagen that have been studied to help restore elasticity and skin tone and help combat the effects of natural aging.

I also recommend it as it’s sourced from grass fed beef and pasture raised chickens, which not all collagen products are. Additionally, it contains Sea Buckthorn, a rich source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an essential co-factor for collagen production in the skin, and I love that I can get all of these benefits in one easy to use product.

I typically have 1-2 servings of New Chapter’s Collagen Glow a day, and add it to my breakfast smoothie, or into coffee or a matcha latte. It dissolves very easily into liquids and is free from any flavorings, so you can even add it into a glass of water.
