What to Look For in a Protein Powder

There are 2 key things I look for when choosing protein powders:

  1. How clean is it? I.e. how much is ‘pure protein’, and how much is fillers, flavourings, etc. I’m also looking to see if it GMO free.
  2. The type of protein – is it animal or plant based, and how is my body going to digest and absorb this type of protein.

The Best Protein Powder for Vegetarians

Joanna is a vegetarian, so I wanted to speak specifically to a protein powder that is best for her nutritional needs. Vegetarian diets can often be low in amino acids, so I recommended a protein made from goats whey. As she doesn’t like the taste of non-caloric sweeteners I suggested she try the Goats Whey from Naked Nutrition. Goats whey is easier on the digestive system than whey made from cow’s milk, and I love Naked Nutrition protein powders as they do not contain any fillers, flavourings or sweeteners.

Specifically, their Goat Whey Protein is just a single ingredient protein powder, is free from GMO’s and is the cleanest option I have found in my research.

Clean Vegan Protein Powders

When considering a clean, unflavored protein powder that is suitable for vegans I recommend Naked Rice from Naked Nutrition. Vegan protein powders can be notorious for containing unnecessary fillers and flavourings, and I like that this option is also a single ingredient protein powder, is GMO free and hexane free. It also blends super easily into a smoothie and with no aftertaste that is often common with plant based protein powders.

Adding Natural Taste to Your Smoothies

When using unflavored and unsweetened protein powders in your smoothies you may find that you need to add something to give it some natural sweetness. Whilst I don’t recommend adding sweeteners that will spike your blood sugar such as honey and maple syrup, the following additions can add sweetness without sugar:

• Cinnamon

• Cacao powder

• 1/2 cup berries

• 1/4 banana

Chunky Monkey Breakfast Smoothie

This Chunky Monkey Breakfast Smoothie is the perfect recipe when using unflavored protein powders – you’ll feel like you are having dessert for breakfast!

Chunky Monkey Breakfast Smoothie

• 1 serving Naked Rice (from Naked Nutrition)

• 1/4 banana

• 1/2 cup frozen cauliflower rice

• 1 tablespoon sugar free peanut butter

• 1 tablespoon cacao powder

• 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed

• 1.5 cups unsweetened almond milk

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth!
